It appears that the Christian missionaries who call the challenge irrelevent or an utterly subjective criterion are pretty much unaware of how the Arabic poetry and prose compares with the Qur'an. This article is devoted to deal with one aspect of the Qur'anic challenge.

    From to Gibb taught Arabic at the then School of Oriental Studies, becoming a professor there in During this time he was an editor of the Encyclopaedia of Islam. In Gibb succeeded D. S. Margoliouth as Laudian Professor of Arabic with a Fellowship at St John's College, Oxford, where he stayed for eighteen years. Nasser Rabbat, Aga Khan Professor and Director of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT, was the distinguished speaker this year for the H.A.R. Gibb Arabic and Islamic Studies Lecture Series, established in in honor of Sir Hamilton A.R. Gibb, who was a director of CMES as well as University Professor and James Richard Jewett Professor of Arabic at Harvard.

      He was Laudian Professor of Arabic at the University of Oxford (?55) and J.R. Jewett Professor of Arabic at Harvard University (?64). From ?66 he was Director of Harvard?s Center for Middle Eastern Studies. His other publications include Arabic Literature, The Legacy of Islam and Modern Trends in Islam.
